Giga Lemonjava, Doctor of International Security Law delivered an open lecture within the framework of the academic course “News Journalism” (supervisor of the program – Nino Chalaganidze) (lecturer – Tamar Belkania) at Caucasus International University.
The lecture referred to the so-called “War Journalism” – “Military aggression of Russia in Ukraine and informational propaganda of Russian”.
“My course of lectures “News Journalism” offers theoretical as well as practical studies and meetings with the individuals, who can provide more practical information for students than is given in textbooks.
American, Russian and European textbooks do not consider the specificity of Caucasus region. It is essential to perceive the theoretical and practical essence of “War Journalism”. Besides studying journalism, students should have the ability to feel and analyze statehood. Taking into consideration the above mentioned, we invite the people who understand the media language.” - Tamar Belkania
Potential journalists became familiar with the specificity of battle scene in the context of news.
They were introduced to the meaning of information war and emphasis was placed on the significance of a command of media language by a journalist. In addition, they should know how information forms and manipulates public opinion. Giga Lemonjava, the Doctor of International Security Law, compared examples of Georgian, Ukrainian and Russian military battalions and discussed a particular case and its coverage forms in Russian, Ukrainian and Georgian media.
“It is crucial for students to listen to a competent person talking about a particular problem. Moreover, when a topic is as important as Russian propaganda in our country.
Personally I did not know a lot of things about media and conflict resolution, I have learnt a lot and I will look at and evaluate every information more critically afterwards” – Davit Tsirdava (2nd year student specializing in journalism).
“We listened to the definition of information war and the significance of good command of media language by a journalist. I know that a journalist has to form public opinion. Therefore, we have to know everything about conflicts and war and provide the society with objective, unbiased information. Such kind of lectures are important for career development of a student – Tako Kvaratskhelia (2nd year student specializing in journalism).
“Various aspects of anti-western propaganda, as well as the crisis in our country and Ukraine, Russian military aggression and its anti-western propaganda in Ukraine will be highlighted today. I reckon that it is essential to discuss such issues with students, as education is the only thing that we can use in order to oppose Russian propaganda. In addition, we should focus on more competence and higher standards in journalism. We met potential journalists, correspondingly it is our duty to prepare them today. Anti-western propaganda will not end next year. This will be the main challenge facing civilized world during the next decade and of course Georgia.
The lecture was very interactive. I was surprised by the qualified and deep questions that were asked by students. This can serve as an evidence that they perceived the essence of the lecture” – Giga Lemonjava (Doctor of International Security Law).
Tamar Belkania and Giga Lemonjava, Doctor of International Security Law agree that such kind and even wider public discussions should continue. Furthermore, the topic of the next lecture has also been announced - “Specificity for Covering Terrorist Attacks”.
