The laboratory of Caucasus Geopolitical Modeling and Tbilisi Institute of International Relations organized an international scientific conference on Opportunities for Science Diplomacy in the Peace Process at Caucasus International University on November 6, 2019.
The conference was opened by Kakhaber Kordzaia, Caucasus International University Rector. The keynote speech was delivered by Aleksandre Rusetski, director of CIU Laboratory for Caucasus Geopolitical Modeling and Tbilisi Institute of International Relations. The conference was also attended by Metropolitan Isaiah of Nikozi and Tskhinvali, Jemal Gamakharia, Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, Zviad Gabisonia, General Director of the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation and other honorable guests.
The conference was dedicated to the international day “Science for Peace” introduced by UN which is celebrated annually on November 10th. The conference is also part of the ongoing research within the framework of PhD programs of the National Science Foundation of Georgia. One of the main objectives of the research is to describe unused or underused opportunities in the peace process.
It is noteworthy that such kind of event is held for the first time in Georgia, which is dedicated to the development of such field as science diplomacy. Separate directions of science and the role of prominent scientists in the peace process was discussed at the conference. In addition, they placed emphasis on the role of science in stirring up conflicts.
In addition, it should be mentioned that Caucasus International University is the initiator of an international movement - Universities for Peace. The University Diplomacy Center has been established for the first time in its history and is active in this field. It is significant that multi-channel diplomacy elements have been introduced for the first time in Georgia and Caucasus. John McDonalds, an outstanding American diplomat, founder of the conference paid a visit to the university in 2015. Tbilisi Institute for International Relations International and School for Multidisciplinary Diplomacy were established in 2018. It represents Georgian version of American multichannel diplomacy.
