Public lectures were held for CIU students, administration and academic personnel on June 8, 2018 within the framework of Pan-European campaign – Euromelanoma 2018, which aims at skin cancer screening and Melanoma prevention, facilitation of early diagnosis and raising awareness of the public.
The first lecture - Sun, Tan, Moles, Melanoma – Myths and Reality was conducted by Lali Mekokishvili, CIU Associate Professor, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, national representative of Euromelanoma in Georgia. The speaker discussed sun radiation, its positive and negative characteristics. In addition, the audience has been introduced to early signs of malignant tumors of the skin - basal cell carcinoma, spinal cell carcinoma and melanoma through photo materials and other visual aids.
The second lecture on the topic – How to Protect Yourself from Hazardous Solar Radiation was delivered by Maya Datuashvili, CIU Associate Professor. She placed emphasis on how to protect skin from the sun, children’s skin care peculiarities and negative sides of solarium.
After the completion of the lectures, interested individuals had free skin screening on suspicious skin growth with the help of the so called dermatoscopy at CIU Clinical Skills Center.
Within the framework of the above mentioned campaign, CIU Affiliated Clinic – Tbilisi Cancer Center offered free skin cancer screening to the population where CIU students specializing in Medicine, who had taken courses in dermatology and oncology, were given opportunity to examine patients on June 9.
We would like to remind you that Euromelanoma campaign is organized for the seventh time in Georgia. This year, besides the screenings held at clinics, informational public lectures are conducted at CIU, Kutaisi Akaki Tsereteli State Unievrsity and Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University.
