Nino Oniashvili is a head of the Department of Oncological Genetics at Recanati Genetic Institute – Beilinson Hospitals in Israel. It represents scientific educational base of Telaviv University.
The speaker discussed the direction of genome medicine, which aims at treating each person by adjusting to his/her unique genetic profile.
Nino Oniashvili discussed the development of the sphere based on particular figures and facts for CIU students. As stated by her, there are 7,6 10⁹ people on the earth. The slightest differences between them on molecular level cause huge difference in their health condition.
The speaker talked about an international research project headed by James Watson in 1990, aiming at complete identification of human genome (20-25 thousand genes), identification of human genome, complex approach and creation of new medication. As stated by Doctor of Genetic Sciences, this project finished in 2003 and the research outcomes are available for any internet user through Gen Bank database.
The public lecture provoked interest among students specializing in Medicine and the concluding part of the lecture was held in the form of question-responses.
