Zampano has been making his living as an itinerant street performer for a long time – he exhibits feats of strength by breaking a chain bound tightly across his chest. He knows neither kindness nor humour, therefore he hates Matto, a talented high wire artist. One day, Zampano buys a slave woman in a poor village as his assistant.
Italian criticism compared Fellini’s “La Strada” (The Road) with Dostoevsky’s works and Fellini himself - Fyodor Dostoevsky. The film portrays the life of poor itinerant circus artists. The main character, Zampano purchases Gelsomina living in a poor village and she has to assist him during the performances.
The film tells us about inhuman brutality, the life of ridiculous, clumsy Gelsomina and gloomy and rude Zampano in a severe and cold world. In addition, it shows people who try to defeat sorrow by their own principles.
