Informational-Educational Session was held at CIU Conference Hall on February 11, 2019. The event was initiated and organized jointly by the Institute of Neurology and Neuropsychology, Epilepsy Center, Georgian Chapter of the International League Against Epilepsy, Association of Young Epileptologists and Caucasus International University.
Within the framework of the informational-educational session, the presenters delivered speeches on such significant issues as:
Education problems in adolescents with epilepsy;
Epilepsy and pregnancy;
Epilepsy and sports;
Epilepsy, philosophy and religion.
Ms. Sophio Kasradze, CIU Associate Professor made the first presentation. She reviewed the history of epilepsy. In addition, the speaker placed emphasis of the definition of epilepsy, clinical symptoms, first description of the disease in historical sources and stigma existing in society.
The second presentation – Epilepsy and Treatment During Pregnancy was made by Ms. Nino Gogatishvili, a representative of the Institute of Neurology and Neuropsychology, Doctor of Medicine, and a pediatric neurologist. She reviewed the statistical data of Women’s and Children’s health and reproductive health in 2017.
The presenter also introduced to the audience the winner research of the fundamental grant contest announced by Shota Rustaveli National Scientific Foundation which has been implemented by Scientific-Practical Center for Epilepsy Control and Prevention at the Institute of Neurology and Neuropsychology.
The presentation delivered by Ms. Tamar Ediberidze, pediatric neurologist – Epilepsy and Sport analyses the advice and significant details which should be taken into consideration by the individuals suffering from epilepsy and their family members.
As stated by Tamar Ediberidze, some sports activities may really contain risks; however, by considering the individual cases we can balance risks and benefits.
Some advice if you suffer from epilepsy:
Use sports safety equipment (helmet, vets, etc.);
Inform your coach and team members about the possible seizure and the necessary first aid;
Talk to your doctor about individual risks of sports exercises;
Follow water and food intake regime and have sugar-containing snacks with you.
The informational-educational session has been closed by a presentation made by Mr. Davit Kvernadze, head of Epilepsy Department at the Institute of Neurology and Neuropsychology. In his speech – Epilepsy, Philosophy and Religion, he discussed epilepsy in philosophical and religious plane and presented significant findings to the society.
We would like to remind you that the aim of the event was to support the people suffering from epilepsy, eliminate prejudice about epilepsy, establish appropriate and correct information and decrease epilepsy stigma.
